Have you ever had someone encourage you? I mean really…deep down…speaking life over you…ignite-a-fire-in-your-heart type of encouragement? I have. Whew, let me tell you. It rallied me and made me want to make sure I passed on that power of encouragement all around me! Our words matter and there is power in encouragement, sweet friend. The words we speak over ourselves and those around us…they bring life or death.
My Encounter with the Power in Encouragement
Recently, I had someone look at me straight in the eye and say, “You have so much potential…go and do it.” I didn’t know this person very well. Only from the conversation that we had just had together. But I did know this precious lady knew Jesus. He was the topic of our entire conversation. But in a sense, it was a battle cry for me. To have a sister in Christ, who I had just met, encourage me like that was eye-opening for me.
Can I just tell you, without her encouragement…I don’t think I’d be sitting here writing these very words. See, I’ve been mulling over starting my own blog and writing for a long time…longer than I’d like to admit. But I knew it was something placed deep within me that wasn’t going to just go away even with all the excuses that I tried to throw at it. So slowly…I mean painfully slow…I began the process. But after a few months, there was a pause…a LONG one. This is where my new, sweet friend entered with her powerful encouragement.
The way she spoke to me with such truth and love left me almost speechless. How did she know exactly what I needed to hear? Not just what I needed to hear to make me feel more confident but what I needed to hear to get me moving again…pointed in the right direction and with the right perspective.
Our Words Matter
But let’s be real honest for a minute, we like to tear each other down, don’t we ladies. Sadly, I’m guilty of it too. Instead of encouragement, quite often we are met with or we pass along jealousy, negativity, and backbiting words. Why do we think that another sister in Christ making a difference for the Kingdom automatically makes us less than? I don’t know maybe because we secretly compare and compete…all…day…long.
What if we turned it on its head and did the exact opposite? The precious lady that encouraged me to run the race of faith in obedience over fear is touching lives now through these words that I write because she chose to encourage me. She didn’t have to but I’m so thankful that she did…she probably doesn’t know to what extent that impacted me to move forward in serving Christ.
Encouragement as a Mission
If we know our words matter and there is power in encouragement, what if we viewed that as our mission? What if we viewed encouraging, praying over, cheering on, listening to (without judgment) our fellow sisters in Christ as a form of leveraging our lives for Christ?
I’ve found that when we do this it usually leaves people both surprised and shocked when we pass on positivity with love and truth. I really don’t think most people are expecting it. Often times, I think we are usually silently bracing ourselves for a low blow or a hurtful word. But encouragement is like a balm to the soul. And it’s contagious. When we receive it, it changes our whole demeanor and it sparks a fire in us…one that spreads to those around us. Encouragement acts as a catalyst over our lives. So who are those people that need life-giving words from each of us? I would venture to say they are close by and placed there on purpose.
As a Mama, I think of it this way too: I have 2 daughters (and a sweet son too but we are specifically talking about us girls for now) that I pray God will strategically place Christian ladies in their paths to encourage them as they grow. In the same respect, maybe we are those strategically placed women of faith in someone’s life. Think over that for a minute…that’s perspective-changing, right?
Let Me Encourage You
Yes! We all want to be those inspiring women who do amazing things…but somedays…I’m changing diapers the majority of the day or defusing arguments or kissing boo-boos or singing the ABC’s for the 100th time hoping they stick. On days when I feel like I’m accomplishing very little…I have to remind myself that where I am is my mission field. So let me encourage you of this too my sweet friend, being a Mama and a wife is a ministry. How often we can think or even say, “if we can just reach the next stage of motherhood or married life then I can do this or that.” Again, super guilty myself. But we are a vital role in shaping the future generation, Mamas. We are right here…in this moment…let’s be present and view these moments as important moments. Let’s let our voices of encouragement start first with those closest to us.
And when we get an opportunity to encourage another Mama, let’s take it. Tearing each other down only gives us a false sense of superiority for just a fleeting moment…encouraging someone can last a lifetime and even potentially impact a future generation.
So let me encourage you in Christ in the same way that I was encouraged: you have so much potential…go and do it!
